The author began his service in the Continental Navy in 1779 at the age of 14. He was taken prisoner by British in 1781 and held at Old Mill Prison. While in prison, he became ill and was released. Sherburne, who was raised in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, lived in Maine after leaving the Navy. In 1818 he moved to Ohio. Howes S-391. Kaplan 5170. Harbeck, p. 97.
