On pages 2 and 3, in one and 1/2 columns, is a reprint of a letter from Governor Thomas Chittenden of Vermont to the President of the United States Congress. Governor Chittenden comments on the troubles between New York State and Vermont, "...Vermont does not wish to enter into a war with...New York, but...she will act on the defensive...this state is still desirous of a confederation with the United States..." Vermont declared its independence in 1777 and united with the United States in 1791. The Massachusetts Centinel began publishing on March 24, 1784. Before Benjamin Russell co-founded the Massachusetts Centinel, he was an apprentice to Isaiah Thomas during the American Revolution. As a result of Benjamin Russell's journalistic efforts, "...he soon became an important citizen, and his paper the most enterprising and influential in Massachusetts."
