Jean Antoine Nollet was a physicist and scientific instrument maker. He supplied instruments to Voltaire. This work, the author's last, "...offers the `amateur of physics' the distillation of forty years of attention to the `choice, construction and use of instruments.'" DSB X, p. 145. Nollet also experimented with electricity and was a supporter and sometimes rival of Benjamin Franklin. Blake, p. 326.
