In 1773, Filippo Mazzei emigrated to Virginia and lived on his vineyard that adjoined Jefferson's Monticello estate. He began a long friendship with Thomas Jefferson and became acquainted with John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. Mazzei was in favor of the cause of American independence "...one of the largest and probably the most reliable works of the period on the United States. Much of the author's knowledge of American affairs had been gained from his former neighbor (Thomas Jefferson) in the first place, and the historical value of his work was considerably if not primarily due to his reliance on this invaluable source." Dumas Malone, Jefferson and the Rights of Man, p. 109. Howes M-456. Sabin 47206. Internally, a tight, bright set.
