In 1773, Filippo Mazzei emigrated to Virginia and lived on his vineyard that adjoined Jefferson's Monticello estate. He began a long friendship with Thomas Jefferson and became acquainted with John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. Mazzei was in favor of the cause of American independence "...one of the largest and probably the most reliable works of the period on the United States.
