Truman Post was born in Vermont and graduated from Middlebury College. In 1833, he moved to Jacksonville, Illinois and became a professor of Classics at Illinois College. In 1847, Post moved to St. Louis and became pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church, which he headed until 1882. In 1851, his church voted to become Congregational.
