General Albert Sidney Johnston served as commander of the army of the Republic of Texas and the Republic's Secretary of War. After Texas joined the United States, he rejoined the United States Army and continued to serve in Texas. General Johnston was mortally wounded in 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh.
