New York: Anson D.F. Randolph, 1862.

Extra illustrated tinted title page, and illustrated with 20 marvelous large chromolithographic plates by Parsons after van Lennep, all printed by Endicott & Co., most tissue-protected. 48 pages of text. Thin folio (17.75 x 14 inches), rebound in plain brown cloth (ex-library copy with small ink stamp inside front cover and small perforated stamp on the title, otherwise a virtually spotless copy). New York: Anson D. F. Randolph, 1862. Very good condition.

First and only edition of this very rare and stunning American chromolithographic work with lavish color plates. One of the few large-scale American chromolithographic works produced during the Civil War period, and probably the best such work created in 19th- Century America. Van Lennep had been a missionary in Anatolia since 1840 and "produced these fascinating costume drawings in oils largely of the Armenians there, also of Greeks and Jews. This is a rare work." -Blackmer Sale 1500; Bennett 108; McGrath 38, 115, 162; DAB XIX 200; Hiler 871.
