Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist.

Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 21 1/8" x 24 5/8"

Beautiful scarce plan of London with a black and white panorama beneath, published circa 1740. On upper left and right portion are detailed illustrations of Whitehall and the London Stock Exchange. The hand colored portion of the map distinguishes the part of the city once confined by the London Wall, as well as 74 prominent locations and landmarks in accordance with a key. Below the map, an abundance of wooden ships are rendered, illustrating the city's status as a port. This map was printed from the Homann's original by his heirs. As was customary for Homann's maps and other Dutch maps of the mid-1700s, the plan has been colored and the vignettes and view left uncolored. In very good condition with minor repairs to the left and bottom margins. Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a renowned German mapmaker of the late 17th and early 18th century who served as geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers.
