1 page, 8.25 x 6 inches, removed from an 1851 Yale yearbook, the year he graduated, to fellow classmate, staunch unionist and future judge Marcus Lyon, in part: "...I very much regret that our acquaintance was not formed at an earlier period of our College course. In accordance with the hand of Fate you were not here during the 1st year. I was away the 2nd...The time is near at hand when we must bid farewell to College and to each other. But - I trust we shall occasionally meet in after life and learn how the world has used the other." With the inclusion of a second signature on the back. Near fine condition.
Confederate officer during the Civil War who was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and graduated from Yale University in 1851. He joined the elite Washington Artillery on May 26, 1861, and by late September had been elected 1st Lt. of the 4th Company of that battalion and commanded a section of 12-pounder howitzers at Bull Run. In the defense of Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg in December 1862, Battles was severely wounded in the arm while serving as a staff officer to General Robert Ransom. He returned to active duty that spring, however, and continued service as a section commander up until being captured at Petersburg on April 2, 1865. Imprisoned at Old Capital Prison in Washington, D.C., he was released on July 18th 1865.
