Very attractive 1971 First Day Cover honoring World War II frontline reporter Ernie Pyle, who was killed in action in 1945, boldly signed by Benjamin O. Davis (the first African-American Air Force General and Commander of the World War II Tuskegee Airmen), Colin L. Powell (the first African-American Secretary of State and retired four-star general), and Samuel Gravely Jr. (the first African-American in the United States Navy to serve aboard a fighting ship as an officer, retiring as a Vice-admiral). The signatures of Davis and Gravely include the highest rank they achieved at retirement. The envelope measures 3.75 x 6.5 inches and was postmarked in Washington, D.C. on May 7, 1971. Fine condition.
