Signed Portion of a Mexican War Document

1847.

0.75 x 9.5 inches, no place, no date, circa 1847 -- a narrow entry removed from a muster roll, signed: "H.M. Judah - Captain & co. Commander." Docketed on verso: "Staff - 4th Infantry." Signed at the time when such notables who served with the 4th Infantry included U.S. Grant, James Longstreet, Philip Sheridan, George Crook, and Delaney Floyd-Jones. Very good condition.

Union Brigadier General and Indian fighter best remembered for his role in helping to thwart Morgan's Raid in 1863 and for leading a disastrous attack during the Battle of Rescara. Note: Henry Moses Judah was not Jewish. His father was a Parish Minister in an Episcopal Church of which Henry was a member of the congregation. He fought with bravery and distinction during the Mexican War but suffered heavily during the Indian campaigns and Civil War due to his raging alcoholism. He died at age 45 and is quite scarce in autographic material.
