Nice early sea chart of part of the coast of Southern California which includes a plan of Santa Barbara, mission and an inset bird's eye view. Soundings in feet and detailed sailing instructions including to avoiding the thick kelp in winter. Lovely elevation details included with this small chart. Splitting apart along margins of original folds but no tape or repairs. Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was an incredibly prolific surveyor who worked as the superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, the oldest scientific organization in the U.S. Federal Government. This map is a fascinating historical document of an ever-changing coastline.
