This miniature map shows the region of Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. The map extends from the Gulf of Trieste to the Bay of Kvarner and includes parts of modern-day Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia. The map also includes the Gulf of Venice in the Adriatic Sea. The moire patterned sea has two tiny ships and sea monsters, and there is a small title cartouche in the lower left. Forts are colored red. Latin text on verso. The map is from the Latin edition of Langenes's "Caert Thresoor," published between 1600 and 1606. Although unsigned, the map was likely engraved by Petrus Kaerius (Pieter van den Keere). The map is in good condition with full original margins. Minor scuffing and toning. First published in 1598, Barent Langenes's "Caert-Thresoor," or "Map Treasury," included plates executed by the most famous engravers in Amsterdam. The atlas and its well-engraved small maps set a new standard for minor atlases. This map of Istria reflects growing cartographic knowledge and skill in Amsterdam at the turn of the century.
