Carta geografica dell'Isola di Sardegna

Venice: Giovanni Battista Albrizzi, 1750.

Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 13" x 16.75".

This exquisite map of Sardinia has two country vignette cartouches that depict the island's idyllic lifestyle. Published circa 1750, the map dates to the period when the island was ruled by the House of Savoy. It features pictorial depictions of mountains, forts, and prominent churches, and cities and rivers are also labeled. The title cartouche in the lower left shows a man resting against a set of rocks on which the title is carved, with his dog looking out ahead of him. An additional cartouche in the upper right shows women taking water from a well and pushing a wheelbarrow of produce, along with two deer. The map is in excellent condition. Narrow margins. Giovanni Battista Albrizzi (1698-1777) was a prominent Venetian publisher of books and maps. He inherited his business from his father and was part of a family active in publishing and bookselling in Venice for 150 years. In addition, he edited a weekly bulletin, Novelle della Repubblica delle Lettere, which reviewed and commented on books published throughout Europe. This elegant map demonstrates Albrizzi's skill and eye for culture.
