Item #234184 Carte du Cours du Menan; Bangkok. Jacques Nicolas BELLIN.

Carte du Cours du Menan; Bangkok

Engraving with original hand-colored. Image measures 8.5" x 5.75". Sheet measures 12.5 x 9.25".

This map, published circa 1764, shows the course of the Menan River (Chao Phraya River) to the Gulf of Thailand, passing through the town of Bangkok. The Gulf is tinted with a light yellow and the river is outlined in a subtle blue. A ornamental compass rose appears to the right of the map, and a decorative border surrounds the title to the left. The map is a dark impression in very good condition, with wide original margins and very minor foxing in the margins outside the image. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingenieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office). He was particularly well known for his maps of the French Empire, especially the territories in North America. This map is a fine example of his detailed work.
