Rare Autographed Letter Signed in French

Cairo: 1897.

1 page, 8 x 5 inches, with an embossed metallic copper seal bearing the Said family Royal coat of arms, Cairo, January 18, 1897. Signed "Said Halim" and written to Madame la General Knowles, wife of British Major General O.B. Knowles, Commander of all military forces in Egypt, accepting an invitation to a grand function and sending his most esteemed regards. Accompanied by the original envelope in Said's hand, emblazoned with the Royal family coat of arms. Very good condition.

A Prince by birth-right born in Cairo, he was the grandson of Muhammad Ali, "founder of modern Egypt." The "Pasha" in his name is an honorific that translates in English to "Lord." He is best remembered for the alliances he signed between the Ottoman Empire and Germany during World War l which led to his being charged with treason and other war crimes during the military trials. He was exiled to Malta in 1919 and in 1921 was assassinated by agents of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation for his role in the Armenian Genocide.
