Autographed Letter Signed Requesting an Extended leave of Absence

Richmond, KY: 1861.

2 pages (front and back), 7 x 5.5 inches, Richmond, Kentucky, October 22, 1861. Written to Colonel Alexander Hamilton Bowman, Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, requesting an extended leave of absence from the service due to the death of his father-in-law, on black bordered mourning stationery, in part: "...Upon my arrival here I have found that it was necessary that I shall take part in the settlement of my Father-in-laws' estate. This may possibly require my presence here much longer than I anticipated when I left West Point...and therefore my application for an extension to the 15th. I am informed that time is too limited, but I hope to be able to accomplish all that absolutely necessary. Should, however, I find that my presence here cannot be dispensed with...I may be compelled to throw myself upon your indulgence. But I trust this will not be necessary..." Signed "S. V. Benet." Several folds; tiny stain on the first page. Very good condition.

Career military officer who fought through the Civil War, eventually being promoted through the ranks to Brigadier General and Chief of United States Ordinance. Benet was the father of Col. James Walker Benet and Laurence Benet (United States Navy), and the Grandfather of poets Stephen Vincent Benet and Laura Benet. He died on Jan. 22, 1895 and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
