Short 4to, contemporary speckled calf with ornate gilt spines (joints starting; pages generally clean but cropped close at fore-edge; plates are somewhat toned with offseting on facing pages). London: Printed by Henry Hughs, 1784-1785. A good usable copy of this classic book.
The work praised by Cuvier as valuable to naturalists "gave a "condensed view of the progress of discovery" along the northern coasts of Europe, Asia, and America." The title is misleading, as the book covers Norway, Scotland, Alaska, Canada, California, Greenland, and Nova Scotia, concentrating particularly on new species of birds. Illustrations include a rare plate and t.p. vignette of moose after paintings by George Stubbs. "For this work [Pennant] received information from George Low and other Scottish naturalists, and from Sir Joseph Banks, who had visited Newfoundland." -- DNB.
