Item #203007 Vue de la Nouvelle Yorck (Collection des Prospects). Balth. Frederic LAZELT.

Vue de la Nouvelle Yorck (Collection des Prospects)

Augsburg: L'Academie Imperiale d'Empire des Arts Libereaux.

Engraved view of New York with modern hand coloring. Image measures 12" x 15.5".

An "optic view" print originally meant to be projected and seen through optic viewing device (therefore, the title printed on the page is backwards). Includes a description in both German and French which loosely translates to: "New York, a city in North America on the Island named Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson River, which was first settled by the Dutch in 1615 and called New Amsterdam. In 1666 it was taken over by the British and named New York." Although the print is clearly entitled "New York", it was common practice in the eighteenth century to present stock prints of European cities as whatever subject was sought. It is unclear if this particular piece is in fact a view of New York, or of another city.
