Martine (1702-1741), was a Scottish physician, whose classic essays revived the study of clinical thermometry. Colden (1688-1776), was a botanist, writer, and lieutenant-governor of New York. His interest were broad, and he wrote on yellow fever, thermometry, meteorology and, as here, on gravitation.
