The well-known German author Jung-Stilling (1740- 1817), friend of Goethe, Herder, and other prominent men of the day, was also a physician who dedicated himself particualrly to the treatment of the diseases of the eye. He was especially dexterous as an ophthalmic surgeon and renowned for successful extraction of cataract about which he published some interesting works. His first cataract operation is described in this biography. (pp.206-209).
