8 pages (front and back) on lined paper, each two-page spread measuring 9 x 10.75 inches, Menlo Park, New York, March 25, 1883, Written to the son of an old friend, in small part: "...My memory of events between 1842-1851 is in many ways imperfect which I attribute to quantities of quinine taken in 1851-52 while I was in Central America..." One handwritten correction in red. Slight ink smearing on the last page, but still in very good condition.

American attorney who was sent by Commodore Vanderbilt to attempt the building of a canal across Nicaragua. Doyle nearly died of malaria in this infamous attempt, but was saved by quinine treatment years before this was made available to ordinary workers, who died by the thousands in Nicaragua and later Panama.
