Written in his seventieth year, this treatise was the result of fifty years' observation and treatment. Duncan did more than any other man of his time to bring Edinburgh medical teaching to the high esteem it enjoyed. At the end is a paper by Duncan on the preparation of sporific medicines from garden lettuce. This remedy Duncan found most effective for the cough accompanying consumption.
