Signed "AE Burnside," written just three months after Lee's surrender, declining an invitation to attend a public event at Cambridge, in part: "I am very sorry that some business engagements call me to New York this week, as they prevent the possibility of accepting your kind invitation to attend the Commemoration at Cambridge on the 21st. I have just told Mr. Jackson that I will make an effort to hasten my work in New York, and if possible will reach Cambridge Friday morning..."
