Carte des Costes de L'Afrique Depuis Cabo Corso Jusques a Omorro

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand coloring and gilding. Image measures 22.5 x 17"

This map shows the western coast of Africa from modern-day Togo southeast to Angola. The coastline is finely rendered and labeled with ports, capes, and soundings, intersected by rhumb lines centered in the gulf. A beautiful colored and gilded compass rose towards the bottom of the map highlights the exploratory context in which this turn-of-the-18th century map was made. The map is in excellent condition with full margins, one chip to left side not affecting the image. Clean, bright, and beautiful. Pierre Mortier (1661-1711) was a French cartographer, engraver, and print seller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois." This map is a resplendent example of his work.
