Lieutenant General in the Soviet Army who distinguished himself in combat during World War II. He later headed the Chemical Troops and was directly responsible for providing Syria with weapons of mass destruction in the 1980s. He had a controversial role in the Chernobyl crises, placing himself in harm's way at ground zero in order to record radiation levels in the vicinity.
