Inscribed by the author. Gamaliel Bradford enlisted in the Continental Army in 1776 and served until 1784, rising to the rank of lieutenant. From 1799 to 1800, he commanded two United States ships as a privateer against France. The essays in this book are on his views on morality and were original published in 1814 in the Boston Spectator.
