United States North America

London & Dublin: A. Fullerton % Co.

Map. Wax engraving (cerograph). Image measures 16.25 x 21.5".

This map of the United States dates the outset of the Civil War, when many of the western territories were still unclear in both their boundaries and allegiances. Nebraska, Oregon, and Utah are all significantly larger than their current incarnations. The Baja Peninsula is labeled as "Old California," and a part of present-day Oklahoma is named as "Indian Territory." Within these borders, defined as they are by light pastel coloring, the map offers fine topographical detail particularly of the mountainous west. The precision of cerography, or wax engraving, also benefits the West Indies, which are rendered meticulously even at such a small scale. The map appeared in A. Fullarton & Co.'s "World Atlas." It is in very good condition with very minor foxing to the center seam and margins. No chips or years and overall very clean. Archibald Fullarton was a prominent Glasgow-based publisher who worked under the firm of A. Fullarton & Co. This map is a fine example of his work.
