Boldly signed in full on the limitation page by Madigan. Also included is a five-line autographed letter signed by Herbert Spencer (1820-1903), an English philosopher, sociologist, and political theorist. This one-page letter, written on blind-stamped "Athenaeum Club" stationery measuring 7 x 4.5 inches, is expertly laid into the book on a special preliminary page made for this very purpose, in full: "Tuesday Dear Lady Lubbock I hope to be with you on Friday, by which time I hope you will have mended your ways in the choice of reading! Sincerely yours, Herbert Spencer." Pall Mall, London, no date. Horizontal folds; small paper remnant along the left edge. Very good condition.
