Carte de la Tartarie Independante qui comprend le Pays de Calmuks, celui des Usbeks, et le Turkestan avec leurs dependances

Paris. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 12 x 17.25". Sheet measures 15.5 x 20"

This map of Central Asia covers the region between the Caspian Sea and China. The political geography it depicts, which consists mainly of Independent Tartary, is quite different than in the modern day. From a present perspective, the map encompasses the nations of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, as well as parts of adjacent Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The map is accented with hand coloring that makes the region stand out within the wealth of information printed on the maps, including tribal areas, villages, cities, deserts, Silk Route way stations, and river systems. In the lower right is a decorative cartouche that contains some of the natural and cultural artifacts for which Tartary was known. The map is in very good condition with full margins. Some discoloration along the center seam. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as Hydrographer to France, and during his term, he produced a numbered of detailed and useful maps, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compasses roses and marks a turn in European mapmaking away from decoration toward practicality. This map is a quintessential example of his significant work.
