Former New York City Detective who became the personal bodyguard and later head of the Secret Service detail protecting President Franklin D. Roosevelt. On February 15, 1933, he personally tackled Giuseppe Zangara when he opened fire in the direction of the Presidential motorcade, hitting five people and killing Mayor of Chicago Anton Cermak. Zangara was quickly tried, convicted and electrocuted - all within three weeks of the attack. Gennerich died at age 49 of a heart attack while protecting the President on a state visit in Argentina.
