North Part of Middlesex Co. Connecticut

Boston: D.H. Hurd & Co. 1893.

Map. Lithograph with hand coloring. Image measures 18 x 28".

This desirable map of Middlesex Country, Connecticut shows the region's geography and topography in fine detail. It includes the towns between Cromwell in the north and East Haddam in the south, with hand-colored divisions between each town. Significant roads, railroads, property, topographical features, buildings, and landmarks are all labeled. The county alone is depicted on the map, but the geographical areas beyond the county's boundaries are clearly labeled in minimalist capital letters: New London County, New Haven County, Chester, Glastonbury, and so on. A particularly charming element of the map is the Connecticut River, which snakes right through the center of the region. The title of the map is finely printed in the upper right. The map appeared as plates 160 and 161 in D.H. Hurd and Co.'s "Town and city atlas of the state of Connecticut." It is a clear impression on bright paper and in excellent conditon. Very little wear. D.H. Hurd & Co. published only two atlases: one of New Hampshire and one of Connecticut. Yet their volumes are distinctive for their attention to detail, with each state divided into small regions that display a wealth of information related to property, topography, and infrastructure. This map of the northern part of Middlesex County exemplifies the publishing firm's scarce work.
