Paris: Editions Barenreiter, 1969. Facsimile collection of Merian's European views. Includes 319 views. Small 8vo, original leather covers and binding with gold embossed title on cover and spine. Decorative metal latch.
This charming album consists of miniature reproductions of Matthaus Merian's famous views of Europe, spanning Switzerland, Germany, and the regions of Alsace and Lorraine in France. The reduced size of the views is owing to Johann Hieronymous Lochner, a Nuremberg-based publisher who first issued a collection of miniature Merian views in 1751. As the preface describes, the reduced size of this earlier volume, as well as the present re-issue, was meant to emphasize the views' status as decoration and entertainment rather than cartography, a status which, according to the author, better befits Merian's historical legacy.
