Map. Engraving with modern hand coloring. Image measures 21 x 26 3/4". Page size measures 21 1/2 x 27 1/2".

This lovely plan of Paris described streets, buildings, gardens, parks, museums, cemeteries and notes the address of 67 prominent residents. The cartouche dedicates the map to Lord Simon Arnauld, the Marquis de Pomponne, an influential diplomat. An inset in the lower left shows the environs around Paris. Lutetia is floating in a cloud in the upper right representing the cities ancient roots. She holds up the people of Paris and the arms of the King. There is a two inch repair in the upper right and abrasions but overall still very good. Albert Jouvin de Rochefort, (1640-1710) was a French cartographer who did not produce many maps. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a prolific cartographer, engraver and publisher who took over the family map business from his mother when she retired. The business flourished and he gained a great reputation in his lifetime and was appointed 'Geographer to the King' in 1690. There is one other copy of this map in the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). Scarce.
