This beautiful, rare woodcut by Rockwell Kent depicts an African-American woman carrying a basket of laundry. The print is a trial proof for a series of illustrations which Kent did for Lillie McMakin Alexander's 1934 novel, "Candy." The print is in excellent condition with wide margins. It has been professionally matted with archival corners. Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) was an American realist painter from Tarrytown, New York. Kent spent his life in a variety of places, including Maine, Newfoundland, Alaska, Greenland, and South America. His paintings, lithographs, and woodcuts often portray aspects of a life lived in nature and are collected today by major museums throughout the country. Kent was also a prolific writer and illustrator who produced several books. This print is a lovely example of his work.
