Three Signed Items -- a photograph, letter, and envelope

Independence, MO: 1966.

Brief typed letter signed and an inscribed photo-portrait with the original signed manila mailing envelope, sent by Truman to a well wisher who, by chance, while visiting Kansas City on business happened upon the former President while he was retrieving his evening newspaper outside his door and exchanged greetings. When the gentleman returned home to Illinois, he sent a postcard (enclosed) to the former President, along with a typed letter, which says, in part: "I am 38 years of age, the father of six children, and a veteran of World War II. I am extremely proud of my American heritage and go through great lengths to teach my children what it means to be an American, and their responsibility to their country. To commemorate our brief encounter and further illustrate to my children the meaning of democracy, I respectfully request this favor. Could you possibly forward a photograph of yourself and would you be kind enough to sign it for me? You may be confident this would be a most cherished item and be in my family for generations to come." Five days later, Truman sent a one-page unfolded typed letter signed on personal letterhead, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, Independence, Missouri, June 29, 1966, in full: "Dear Mr. Downes: Enclosed is a photograph autographed to you as you requested in your recent letter. I am glad to send it to you and appreciate your wanting it." Truman also sent an inscribed photograph measuring 12.75 x 9.5 inches, from a color portrait painting of himself as president, paper stock. The inscription in the bottom margin says, "To Emmett D. Downes, Kind Regards, Harry S. Truman, 6/30/66," and includes the original mailing envelope, which measures 10 x 13 inches. The envelope says "Harry S. Truman - Independence, MO" and has an authentic franking signature on the upper right. There are no meter markings or postal cancellations. The photo has a border of toning and is in very good(-) condition. The remaining items are in very good condition.
