Beautiful and unusual map of south eastern Norway including Oslo (here called Christiania), circa 1729. Map is flanked by a stunning mining scene. Illustrated in exquisite detail is the process of metal mining and smelting on the mountainside. Both the vignette and the decorative title cartouche remain uncolored. Minor overall wear, small stain to lower right. Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a renowned German mapmaker of the late 17th and early 18th century, including being geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers.
