London: Laurie & Whittle, 1799. unbound. Sea chart. Uncolored copper plate engraving. Image measures 13 1/8' x 27 1/8" very good.
Beautifully detailed map of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. Includes rhumb lines, a compass rose, extensive geographical descriptions of the area and five inset maps: "The Harbour of Carmorta or Noncowry", "North Part of Great Andaman on a larger Scale", "South Part of Great Andaman", "The Channel between the Great and Little Andaman Islands..." and "Port Cornwallis". Five topographical cross-sections depict "The Saddle" on Great Andaman, Barren Island and various views of Narcondam. Published in "The East-India Pilot, or Oriental Navigator, on One Hundred and Eighteen Plates: Containing a Complete Collection of Charts and Plans, &c...", plate 79. Maps are based on the 1745 French "Neptune Oriental" by Jean Baptiste Nicolas Denis d'Apres de Mannevillette. The later English editions include additions by Captain Phins. Hunt, Captain Mackay, Captain John Ritchie and Lieutenant Mc. Cluer. With its beautiful and unusual visual approach, this incredibly scarce sea chart is rarely available for sale. Minor overall toning and offsetting. Full original margins.
