This document appoints the owner of the New York Giants baseball team Postmaster of New York City, in part: "...for and during the term of four years from the twelfth of May, 1897..." Co-signed by James A. Gary as postmaster General. This document is uniformly toned with two discoloration marks caused by the disintegration of the original ribbon; slight weaknesses at the center fold which do not detract from the dark bold signatures. Cornelius Van Cott was the owner of the New York Giants National League Baseball Club from 1893-1897. He had been appointed Postmaster of New York City by President Cleveland from 1889-1893. Upon completion of this commission, he purchased The New York Giants.
