Spanish classical musician and conductor, considered one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century. Casals was an ardent supporter of the Spanish Republican Government and after its defeat in 1939, he vowed not to return to Spain until Democracy was restored. Though in self-exile after the failure of the Republican Government in 1939, Casals spent the rest of his life raising money and aid for dissidents opposed to the Franco Regime.
