Portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel aka William Herschel (1732-1822), German born British astronomer and composer. He is famous for discovering the planet Uranus and he built more than 400 telescopes. His sister Caroline Herschel discovered the first comet and his son John did pioneering work in the field of photography. The engraving is from the early 19th century, by Luigi de Ramos (1773-1840) who was educated in Parma. Light scattered foxing, minor aging to corners.
