Portrait of Edmond Halley (1656-1742), 19th century. Halley was an English astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist and physicist, best known for computing the orbit of Halley's comet which is named for him. He predicted the return of the comet in 1758 but did not live to see his prediction realized. He proposed the construction of bell jars which would allow study of the ocean. In 1720, he assumed the title of Astronomer Royal. The engraver, William Thomas Fry (1729-1843), was one of the first to introduce steel plate engravings. Minor wear along edges.
