A rail is part of a cosmopolitan family of semi-amphibius birds. The bird is standing beside an endangered Soapwort Gentian flower native to Virginia. Minor wear and aging along edges. Mark Catesby (1683-1749), born in England, was America's first naturalist/illustrator. He was the first to comprehensively illustrate natural history delineating the American flora and fauna. Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762) was a German artist and engraver best known for his ornithological artwork (Collection of various foreign and rare birds) circa 1751, which included plates based on the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards.
