Pennock requesting permission to command a tug for two hours so that he can escort another surgeon to the U.S. Essex, and then, back to Capt. Porter. Two horizontal folds and a tiny chip along the bottom edge; still very good condition.
Riley was a surgeon who had to undertake the rank of "Acting Volunteer Lieutenant" aboard the U.S.Essex under Captain A.M. Pennock. Riley resigned in February, 1863 after completing service in the Mississippi squadron.
