Beautiful map of South East Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, part of China, Japan and part of New Guinea from the 1603 edition, second state of "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum." Illustrative details include ships, sea monsters, and primping mermaids. Banner cartouche describes the Spice Islands. A note by New Guinea states that it is unknown whether the landmass is an island. Latin text on back. Small tear to left edge, minor chipping along right edge. Minor discoloration along centerfold. Full original margins. Abraham Ortelius (1527--1598), a Flemish cartographer and geographer, is widely regarded as one of the important and influential cartographers in history. He is known for his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which was the first modern atlas.
