Galliae Veteris Typus
Amsterdam: Jansson, J., 1653.
Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 15.5" x 19.5".
Beautiful map of ancient France depicted after the Roman conquest. The map shows five distinct regions: Celtica, Aquitanica, Ludgunensis, Narbonensis, and Belgica. Extenstive notations describe the region further, with cities and rivers labeled. Mountains and forests are rendered pictorially. No text on verso. Minor discoloration in margins, a few small worm holes.
Jan Jansson was part of an influential family of map publishers from the Netherlands throughout the 17th century and beyond. They were based in Arnhem then in Amsterdam. They were printers, publishers and booksellers. Major publications were under the joint ownership of the Jansson heirs and their printing empire. A lovely example of this hard to find map.
