This register was published several months before the beginning of the Panic of 1857 which occurred in August of that year. During that economic depression many banks had runs on their deposits. Many also failed. This register provides many statistics on the banking industry right before it was affected by the Panic of 1857. Lists include: Banks in the United States by geography, with the name of their President and amount of Capital; Banks in London; Banks in New York City with the name of the President, amount of Capital, and dividend information. Also contains extensive statistics on the Cotton trade and its production.
