With an 18 page life of the author by R.P.M. Remigo. , 819, pp., complete in 10 books TOGETHER WITH: I Quattro Ultimi Libri del l'Historia D'Italia. , 173, pp. Illustrated with woodcuts, including a full-page portrait of Francesco Guicciardini, numerous decorative initials, head & tail pieces & engraved tables throughout. Elaborate woodcut on title page (small repair on lower margin not affecting the text) and smaller printers devices on final leaf in both sections. Very thick 4to, full vellum, faded ink title on the spine. Venegia: Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari, 1568 [colophon 1567]. A excellent copy with occasional browning on some margins.
Francesco Guicciardini's (1483-1540) history was originally published posthumously by his nephew Agnolo in 1561. This appears to be the first complete edition for the two parts were evidently intended to be issued together though printed separately. With the small ownership signature of art historian Meyer Schapiro and W. W. Greg, 1922 on the fly-leaf. Printing and the mind of Man #85; Adams G- 1510.
