The author's name, which is not printed on the title page has been written in by an early hand. The same person has written a neat full page review, extolling the book, on the blank verso of the Contents page. This is one of many editions of the famous and popular satire on the true causes of social welfare and riches, Mandeville suggesting that base behavior produces positive economic effects. Ownership signature of art historian Meyer Schapiro and a page of handwritten notes by him.
