Lever's novels vary from the earlier Irish and military extravaganzas to the 1860's studies of common Irish life and manners. A contemporary of Dickens, Lever was considered a brilliant and amusing novelist, with a humor which poked fun at his own people. Many of his works were first published in series and then assembled into books.
